With the election season in full swing in India, the role of liquor as supposed
facilitator for parties’ electoral success has increased. And Karnataka, it seems is playing a crucial role in this dubious game. It is indicated by the data from the Election Commission that as on 8 th April, liquor worth Rs 33.59 crore was seized in Karnataka.
Till 10th April, the state ranked second in terms of value of liquor seized by
authorities in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
However, according to the Additional Chief Electoral Officer, KG Jagadish, not all seized liquor was targeted for distribution among electorates. When the quantity of liquor found is more than that is allotted, it calls for seizures too. Such cases are booked under Excise laws and they don’t come under the ambit of the violation of the code of conduct.
