Despite the fact that the Delhi government’s agencies are about to take over the retail liquor business in Delhi from 1st September the shortage of liquor stores at IGI airport and NDMC areas will continue for some more days.

It is expected that soon after the private players exit from Delhi’s retail  liquor business,  retail liquor licenses for outlets in NDMC areas and IGI Airport will be issued. Till now no retail liquor licenses have been issued in these two areas.

In the recent past, the proposal of Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) and Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) to open liquor stores at four locations in NDMC areas has been rejected.

In accordance with the Delhi government's decision to go back to the old excise regime, 300 liquor vends have been readied in various parts of the city and 360 liquor brands have been registered.   From September, several of the new liquor shops which will be opening will be located near metro stations where footfalls are expected to be higher and safety measures are expected to be better.

Delhi’s excise department has also issued licences for liquor vends in six malls.
