Royal Canadian Small Batch Blended Canadian Whisky has been awarded Great Value, scored 90, and was deemed “Excellent, Highly Recommended.” Its tasting notes are described as “Richly spiced nose with deep, sultry hints of maple syrup, pie tobacco, straw, and campfire smoke.” Rich & Rare Reserve Canadian Blended Whisky is also awarded Great Value, scored 88, and received a “Very Good, Strong Recommendation.” Extracts from the tasting notes read as “Lean and fresh on the palate the whisky leads with oatmeal milk, vanilla, and baked pear flavors to come through.” Caribou Crossing Single Barrel Canadian Whisky scored 88, receiving a “Very Good, Strong Recommendation.” Its tasting notes read, “A brooding nose with aromas of orange bitters and espresso is buoyed by a firm oak presence. What follows on the palate harkens to bourbon with an injection of rye complexity, bringing subtle clove and anise spice alongside creme brulee and bananas foster. Casually complex.” High River Canadian Whisky scored 87, receiving a “Very Good, Strong Recommendation.” Its tasting notes read, “A subtle and demure nose gives way to a medium-bodied whisky full of flavors of buttered biscuit, caramelized sugar, and vanilla bean. The finish is medium-long and consistent, making this an everyday whisky for many applications.” Legacy Whisky scored 86, receiving a “Very Good, Strong Recommendation.” Its tasting notes read: “has a rich nose of leather, tobacco, and vanilla aromas. Flavors are exceptionally well-balanced between vanilla bean, cinnamon baked apples, lavender, honeycomb, and cocoa powder. The finish ups the complexity with a lingering peppercorn spice.” During the 2019 Ultimate Spirits Challenge each product was evaluated by blind tasting panels in multi-stage assessments to remove any inherent or individual bias.
