Presently, the Goa excise department's permit restricts liquor authorised to be sold
in Goa to be transported outside the state (with the exception of the union
territories of Daman and Diu). The restricted quota is only one bottle of IMFL and
one bottle of local Goan liquor.
This results in many tourists returning from Goa by road and carrying bottles of
alcohol over the prescribed quota limit outside Goa paying bribes to excise
officials or having their bottles confiscated.
The Goa’s state government intends to change this restrictive rule, which can
enhance state’s exchequer. Recently the Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant
has told the state legislative assembly that the Goa government would soon start a
dialogue with excise officials from its neighbouring states to chalk out a
mechanism which would enable tourists to Goa to ‘legally’ return to their homes
with a larger chunk of alcohol bottles than they are able to do now legally. This
step can also promote Goan liquor outside the state of Goa.
