TN clarifies about serving liquor at public places

People of Tamil Nadu are not allowed to serve liquor at weddings, banquet halls, family gatherings, functions, and parties.

This was stated by the Tamil Nadu government to the Madras High Court to clarify a change made to the Tamil Nadu Liquor (Licence and Permit) Rules, 1981, regarding serving of alcohol at public places.

The amendment only allows for the issuance of licences to possess alcohol in conference halls or convention centres (other than those in educational institutions). This is done in order to serve the alcohol to attendees of local, national, or international events.

Moreover, The Deputy Commissioner or Assistant Commissioner of Excise would issue the special licence for the possession and serving of alcohol in conference halls and convention centres, with the prior approval of the Collector, only for the duration of the event.

Additionally, the licensee would be needed to obtain a No Objection Certificate from the Superintendent of Police for events hosted in districts and from the Commissioner of Police for events held inside Municipal Corporation bounds. The nearest Tasmac wholesale depot was the only location from which the licensees could then get their supplies.
