The Telangana government has virtually raked in cash by collecting more than Rs. 2,500 crore in non-refundable fees from applications for new liquor stores for the next two years.

The application period for the operation of 2,620 retail liquor outlets in 33 districts of the state for the two-year term (2023-25) opened on 4th August and ended on 18th August at midnight.

According to the excise department of the state, reports from various districts reaching the state headquarters of Telangana prohibition and excise department in Hyderabad has shown that the total number of applications at the closure of the deadline date was a little over 1.25 lakh.

A non-refundable charge of Rs. 2 lakh has been set by the department for each application. The department has generated Rs. 2,500 crore in revenue as a result over the course of 15 days, the official claimed.
