Singapore recalls sake over suspected health risks

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has recalled two sparkling Sake products containing red yeast rice, after their manufacturer Takara Shuzo International Co Ltd., recalled them in Japan over suspected health risks. SFA said the products, Mio Sparkling Sake Premium (Rose) packaged in 300 ml and 750 ml bottles, were recalled due to kidney health risks. SFA said they contained red yeast rice, “beni koji,” which is used as a health supplement.

Japanese drug maker Kobayashi Pharmaceutical informed that it was investigating one death and dozens of hospitalisation cases linked to its health supplement, which contained red yeast rice.
