Deciding the Best of India’s Wines

Deciding the Best of India’s Wines

If there is one wine engagement that I eagerly look forward to every year, it is the Spiritz Blind Wine Tasting (SBWT). I think the competition decides India’s best wines. Several other reasons go towards this adulation, apart from of course, from my being a part of the fixture right from its inception in 2014.

In my opinion, the key USP of SBWT lies in its fairness of conduct. The advantages do not stop here, with some other examples being the event’s totally noncommercial orientation. The flexibility rests with the producers to field as few or as many numbers of wines. And there is a well experienced tasting panel with cknowledged ground level experience. In a nutshell, SBWT has thus been a totally hands-on, upfront and an honest endeavour to arrive at the best wines that India has to offer.

This year, SBWT had 28 Indian wines spread across four categories viz. Sparkling, White, Rose and Red. The wines were served in flights in their respective categories with the White and Red categories having maximum representation. A new feature of this year’s edition of the event was a separate tasting for imported wines conducted on the second day that was divided into single varietal and blended categories followed by a food pairing exercise.

The winners will be announced during the Spiritz 2019 Awards ceremony. As people continue to speculate about the winners, I leave you with a few photographs of SBWT that convey its essence.

May the best wines win!
