Maharashtra hikes duty on permit room liquor service

With effect from 1st November 2023, the Maharashtra government will increase the VAT by 5 percent for permit room liquor service in the state. This move will result in levy of additional duty on liquor service at bars, lounges, clubs, or cafes in the state.

With this hike, now the VAT has reached 10 percent for permit room liquor service across different hospitality setups in the state. However, liquor prices in star hotels in Maharashtra are excluded from this hike as their VAT is at a higher level, that is 20 percent. The recent surge on VAT will not cover the counter sales at retail liquor outlets in the state.
