Liquor permits surged in Gujarat

Gujarat has experienced a substantial 58 percent surge in the number of health-based liquor permit holders over the past three years, reaching a total of 43,470 as of November 2023, up from 27,452 in November 2020, according to the data compiled by the State Prohibition Department.

The liquor permit holders across Gujarat’s major cities include Ahmedabad with the highest at 13,456, followed by Surat at 9,238, and Rajkot at 4,502. Other cities like Vadodara, Jamnagar, and Gandhinagar also have significant numbers of liquor permit holders. The State Prohibition Department's report indicates that the streamlined permit issuance process has positively impacted liquor sales, resulting in an overall increase of at least 20 percent in 2023 compared to the preceding year.
