From 1st September, the prices of  alcoholic beverages are expected to decrease in Assam. In a notification issued on 17th August, the Assam’s excise department has informed that the move comes after an adjustment of ad-valorem taxes on different types of alcoholic beverages, which include Indian-made foreign liquor, beer, wine, brandy, rum and ready-to-drink options. Price reductions in the state for some types of alcoholic beverages are given below.

From 1st September, draught beer with up to 5 percent alcohol content will now have an ad-valorem levy of 0.57 times its assessed value, which would lower its price by Rs 34 per 650ml bottle, in Assam.

Luxury alcobev brands with a maximum retail price ranging between Rs 360 and Rs 500 will have an ad-valorem levy of 1.08 times the assessed value in Assam, which would lead to a reduction of Rs 166 per 750ml bottle in their prices, in the state. Alcobev brands priced between Rs 500 and Rs 700 will have an ad-valorem levy of 1.06 times the assessed value, which would lead to their price reduction by Rs 214 per 750ml bottle, in Assam.

Indian-made spirits priced below Rs 360 per bottle will have an ad-valorem levy of 1.21 times the assessed value in the eastern state, which will lead to their price reduction by Rs 144 per 750ml bottle.
These expected price decreases in alcobev prices in Assam are probably in response to a decline in alcoholic beverage sales following their previous price hike in the state, in March of this year.
