Following the Kallakurichi tragedy, Tamil Nadu's assembly has passed a bill to significantly increase penalties for illicit liquor offenses, including life sentences and hefty fines, while also moving to reduce Tasmac outlets.

TN for increased penalties related to illicit liquor

Following the hooch tragedy in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu that led to 65 deaths, Tamil Nadu assembly has passed a bill where penalties for various offences related to illicit liquor, including manufacture, sale and possession of it, has been increased considerably. The bill mandates life imprisonment along with a minimum fine of Rs 10 lakh for cases leading  to death due to consumption of illicit liquor in Tamil Nadu. 

The bill also entails provisions to confiscate all immovable properties used in the commission of these offences and to seal unlicensed places used for the consumption of liquor in Tamil Nadu.

 

The CM of Tamil Nadu has also directed to reduce the number of Tasmac outlets.
