The market for tequila in India’s alcobev segment is showing great promise. Atul Tiwari says that with the growing market and number of new tequilas coming in the Indian market, they are fueling the curiosity to explore. “Surprisingly for the first time we can see a beverage that is going beyond age, sex or social status in terms of its popularity,” he shares.
Almost everyone who is in the game wants the bigger share of the market and a lot of activations are happening in the tequila space. The Leela Palace Chanakyapuri recently celebrated the Mexican festival Cinco de Mayo which was supported by one of the hotel’s beverage partners and Mexican artists were brought in to bring in the festivities.

What Makes Tequila Tick
Atul believes tequila’s unique flavour & taste and cultural significance make it a top choice for bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts alike. He notes, “Tequila and tequila-based cocktails are more popular than ever, with a growing trend of customers requesting tequila-based drinks.”
The most selling cocktail in The Leela Palace Chanakyapuri is called ‘Pablo Picasso’ which is inspired from two classics – Picante and Paloma. “This is a spicy and bold cocktail that reflects Picasso’s artistic heritage and modern style,” discloses Atul while adding, “Tequila and spices work wonderful and our guests want us to bring more variations.”

When asked whether guests prefer tequila straight or in cocktails, Atul notes that those requesting straight tequila usually have discerning palates. He believes the unique character and intensity of tequila, along with the rising popularity of high-end brands over standard pouring options, have made becoming a tequila connoisseur even more aspirational.

Tequila carries the ability to be versatile and can be enjoyed as a basic level tequila-water, tequilatonic, straight up, in cocktails and so on. Moreover, according to Atul’s experiences, unlike most beverages, tequila has become an all-season drink.
They have a total of 28 labels of tequila & mezcal on their menu. “Indian agave spirit is not available in Delhi due to registration issues; however, we are certain to have it listed on our menu,” Atul asserts.

Bartenders Making It Bigger

Bartenders are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the popularity of tequilas in the Indian market. “Bartenders are delving deep into the world of tequila, exploring ingredients, techniques, and the rich tapestry of local flavours. This exploration is infusing our cocktail scene with a newfound vibrancy and creativity, as mixologists are drawing inspiration from the diverse landscapes of our culinary heritage,” elaborates the seasoned hospitality professional.
“With each innovative creation, bartenders are not only pushing the boundaries of flavour but also building a deeper connection with our community. Through collaborations, tastings, and shared experiences, we are creating a vibrant ecosystem that celebrates the artistry and craftsmanship of cocktail culture,” he adds further.
