The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has advised commuters to comply with state excise regulations while transporting liquor bottles on Metro trains. This follows the 2023 relaxation allowing passengers to carry two sealed liquor bottles each in metros. However, this rule has raised concerns about compliance with varying state laws during cross-border travel in Delhi Metros.

The Delhi government's excise department previously requested the DMRC to reduce the allowance to one liquor bottle to avoid breaching the Excise Act. Before this change, carrying alcohol on Delhi Metro trains was prohibited, except on the Airport Express Line.

DMRC's network spans the National Capital Region, including Delhi, Faridabad, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Noida, where different excise laws apply. DMRC’s Managing Director Vikas Kumar clarified that the excise rules of each state will take precedence. Principal Executive Director, Anuj Dayal reiterated that Delhi metro passengers must adhere to the relevant state excise laws.

For instance, a commuter boarding metro in Delhi with two liquor bottles but traveling to Uttar Pradesh must comply with UP's rule, which allows only one sealed bottle. The DMRC urges all passengers to stay informed and comply with the respective state regulations to avoid legal issues during their journey.
