12 bottles of French Bordeaux wine and hundreds of snippets of grapevines, which did spend a year orbiting in the space, have returned to earth. They were part of the cargo of SpaceX’s Dragon.

Each bottle of wine was carefully packed inside a steel cylinder to prevent its breakage. Space Cargo Unlimited, a Luxembourg startup which is behind the experiments, wanted the wines to age for an entire year in the space.

Bottles wouldn’t be opened before the end of February. In the end of February of this year, one or two bottles of these Bordeaux wines would be popped open and would be presented for wine tasting in Bordeaux before some of France’s top connoisseurs and wine experts.

That would be followed by months of chemical testing as researchers are eager to know how the space environment has altered the sedimentation and bubbles of the wines.
