SC raises concern over increasing illegal liquor trade in Punjab

The Supreme Court has voiced concern over the burgeoning illicit liquor trade and drug problem in Punjab, and instructed the state government of Punjab to make the local police accountable for their failure to keep vigil towards countering illegal liquor trade and drug menace in the border state.

The bench also asked the Punjab government to clearly tell the specific steps taken by it to curb the production and sale of illegal liquor in Punjab. The apex court observed that this twin menace of illegal liquor and drugs could ruin the youth of Punjab. The Punjab government assured the court that the state was taking action and informed that it had destroyed over 13,000 illegal liquor bhattis in the state.
