India becomes UK’s largest Scotch whisky market

According to the latest data issued by Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), India has left behind France to emerge as the United Kingdom's largest Scotch whisky market in terms of volume, with 60 percent increment in Scotch whisky imports in 2022 over that of the last year.

The figure disclosed that India imported 219 million 70 cl bottles of Scotch whereas France imported 205 million bottles of Scotch during the last year.

Although Scotch is one of the key sectors of focus for the UK in the India-UK free trade agreement (FTA), SWA has pointed out that this hike in Scotch whisky volume still constitutes for only a fraction of India’s whisky market.

“Despite double-digit growth, Scotch whisky still only comprises 2 per cent of the Indian whisky market,” the association informed.
