The only way for single malts to capture a significant share of the whisky market, both in India and globally, is to surpass standard quality benchmarks while embracing next- generation innovation and experimentation. In this regard, The Ugar Sugar Works Ltd. stands out with its age-committed single malts. The Executive Director of USW Spirit, Shrikant Hajare, emphasises that to make a mark, The Ugar Sugar Works remains steadfast in its commitment to quality and consistency.

Shrikant Hajare, USW SpiritShrikant observes that the growing demand for single malts in India is driven by a rising appreciation for quality spirits, especially among discerning drinkers who value the depth and complexity of aged whisky. This is one of the reasons why the Indian single malt whisky market has become increasingly competitive, with numerous players entering the field.

Founded in 1939, The Ugar Sugar Works is the flagship company of the Shirgaokar Group, specialising in the production of white crystal sugar for over 85 years. “Our distillery, established in 1962, is one of the pioneering manufacturers of Indian single malt whiskies, as well as some of the finest rums in the country,” Shrikant informs. The company is led by Niraj and Chandan Shirgaokar, who serve as its managing directors.

This attention to detail is one of the key factors that set the company apart. By introducing its seven-year-old and four-yearold expressions, the company positions itself as a serious contender in this space, catering to consumers who seek premium, and aged whiskies that offer a sophisticated drinking experience.

“Although we don’t operate our own cooperage, our dedicated team ensures that every barrel is meticulously repaired and prepared, guaranteeing that our spirit matures in optimal conditions,” he informs.

The Ugar Sugar Works introduced its single malts approximately 18 months ago, initially launching in Karnataka, with expansion into Maharashtra and Goa. The company is also preparing for a launch in duty-free stores by February-end. The sevenyear-old and four-year-old single malts are priced at ₹4,850 and ₹3,050, respectively, in Goa.

“The launch of the seven-year-old and four-year-old single malt whiskies is a significant step in our commitment to India’s growing whisky market. Our decision to offer age-statement whiskies was deliberate, aiming to differentiate The Ugar Sugar Works from its competitors and appeal to consumers seeking specific characteristics tied to age,” Shrikant points out.

Age, Elegance and Flavour

The single malts produced by The Ugar Sugar Works Ltd reflect the company’s ambition to capture a meaningful share of India’s expanding single malt segment. Extended ageing imparts a depth of complexity as the whisky interacts longer with the wood, resulting in a richer, more nuanced flavour profile with notes of oak, spice and dried fruit. It also delivers a smoother, and more refined drinking experience.

Shrikant believes that the success of India’s single malt market is closely tied to the creation of a favourable excise policy. “State governments can drive growth by addressing existing challenges and implementing reforms that support domestic production. Additionally, we hope the government will introduce stricter standards to ensure only genuine single malts are labelled as such, which will help maintain the integrity of the category,” Shrikant says.

While the rising costs of ingredients, logistics, and the ongoing shortage of malt whisky pose significant challenges for Indian distillers, Shrikant believes, “producing single malt whisky in India remains economically viable due to our commitment to quality and efficiency in production. We manage these challenges through careful planning and focus on maintaining our product’s integrity,” he adds.
