Beer prices in Karnataka have been revised with new rates effective from January 20. The new prices are based on alcohol content, categorised into two slabs: Mild beers (under 5 percent alcohol) at Rs 12 per bulk litre and strong beers (5-8 percent alcohol) at Rs 20 pbl.

Previously, the excise duty was uniform at Rs 10 pbl for all beer types. The minimum price for a 650 ml bottle of a strong beer is now ₹145, seeing a significant increase.

This is the third time since July 2023 that the prices of beer have been hiked. Previous revisions included a 10 percent hike in additional excise duty on beer and significant increases on Indian-made liquor.

First, the state government has also notified that all the breweries must adhere to stricter sugar content regulations. It is recommended that beer must be brewed from malt or grain with or without sugar and hops, ensuring that the sugar content does not exceed “25 percent by weight”. Brewers are required to declare all the ingredients on labels, with new labeling standards applicable from February 1, 2025.
