Keegan McGregor wins Diageo World Class 2024

Canadian bartender Keegan McGregor from Halifax’s Highwayman Bar has won the title of  Diageo World Class Global Bartender of the Year 2024. This prestigious competition, themed ‘Future Legacy,’ was held in Shanghai and brought together top bartenders from 44 regions around the world.

McGregor impressed the judges with his innovative use of Scotch whisky, specifically Johnnie Walker Blue Label, showcasing how technology can elevate modern drink-making.

One of the key challenges McGregor faced was creating two cocktails inspired by his hometown of Halifax, and Nova Scotia and Shanghai, using locally sourced ingredients and Don Julio tequila. For his Halifax creation, he drew inspiration from a traditional dish called Hodge Podge, reimagining it in a twist on a classic eggnog.

In the final round, known as the ‘Shanghai Showdown,’ McGregor and seven other finalists were tasked with creating immersive bar pop-up experiences, showcasing their creativity and skill. The event also featured the first-ever World Class Mentorship program and an Industry Forum, which included participation from industry experts.
