Tasmac is endeavouring to make end-to-end computerisation of its operations by the year end, which would make the pending demand from some of theTamil Nadu’s alcobev drinkers to have printed receipt a reality. However, at present out of 11 distilleries and six breweries which supply liquor to Tasmac, only United Breweries, Tropical Breweries and SNJ Breweries dispatch liquor with unique barcodes.

Tasmac has begun testing a software developed by RailTel in Ramanathapuram and Arakkonam and envisages introducing it in Kancheepuram, Salem, Madurai, and Trichy on a pilot basis.

According to an official source, only 10 to 15 percent of liquor bottles in Tamil Nadu come with barcodes and for the rest, barcodes are being manually pasted at Tasmac depots. This makes the complete computerisation of operations for Tasmac a challenging affair. When the number of shops increases for the pilot project, Tasmac depot personnel would be saddled with extra work.

Each distillery and brewery supplying liquor to Tasmac are directed to install barcode generators and scanners and integrate them with Tasmac's end-to-end computerisation software. Manufacturing units have been told to install the equipment before 21st October, after which liquor bottles without barcodes will not be accepted in Tamil Nadu.
