The UK government has introduced two tax relief measures designed to push growth in the alcohol sector. The draught relief increase will reduce duty by 1 percent (pine) on draught pints, while an enhanced small producer relief aims to encourage innovation among small breweries. Collectively, these initiatives represent an £85 million investment in the industry.

The increase to draught relief, first announced in the autumn budget, will impact nearly three in five of all alcoholic drinks sold in pubs, and represents the first duty cut on a pint of beer in 10 years. These developments come amid wider concerns in the alcoholic beverages industry over recent tax increases.

The government has also announced plans to consult on improving access to guest beers in pubs, aiming to support sector growth and provide consumers with greater choice. Meanwhile, the industry is awaiting further details from the Chancellor’s upcoming budget, which may bring additional changes impacting alcohol taxation.
