The Kerala government has put its excise policy for the financial year 2025-26 on hold as the state cabinet failed to reach a consensus on key issues. The much-anticipated liquor policy, which was listed for discussion in the recently concluded cabinet meeting, was postponed without a final decision.

One of the major points of contention is the proposed removal of the dry day, initially recommended only for tourism areas. However, concerns over its implementation led the cabinet to seek further clarity before moving forward.

Another unresolved issue is the distance limit for toddy shops, with several unions demanding relaxed regulations to allow the establishment of new outlets. The cabinet did not reach a conclusion on this matter either, agreeing that further discussions are necessary before making a final decision.
