Telangana hikes beer prices by 15%

The Telangana government has reportedly issued orders to hike beer prices by 15 percent from February 11. The hike took effect after the state government allowed Telangana Beverages Corporation Ltd. (TGBCL) to implement recommendations of a three-member price-fixing committee.

The Committee, comprising a retired judge, a retired senior IAS officer, and a chartered accountant, recommended increasing the MRP of beer by 15 percent, considering the price inflation in raw materials and beer prices in neighbouring states.  The new prices will apply to stocks currently held at depots as well as those in transit.

This move is expected to impact both retailers and consumers. Telangana is one of the largest consumers of beer and holds a unique position as a state where beer is consumed more than hard liquor.

Earlier, United Breweries Ltd. demanded a 33 percent price hike in the state. According to media reports, Telangana has also started releasing pending dues to UBL.
