Appleton Estate unveils its oldest rum

Appleton Estate, the world-renowned Jamaican distillery with over 275 years of heritage, has announced the global debut of The Source 51 Year Old, its rarest and longest-aged rum expression to date. Aged for over five decades exclusively in Jamaica’s tropical climate, this historic release comprises just 25 exquisite decanters, setting a new benchmark for luxury rum worldwide.

Distilled from the estate’s own sugarcane, using traditional copper pot stills and open fermentation, The Source was laid down on July 30, 1973 under the guidance of former Master Blender Owen Tulloch, and brought to life in 2025 by his protégé, the legendary Dr. Joy Spence, the first female Master Blender in the spirits industry.

“Tasting this beautiful expression with Owen over 40 years ago sparked my lifelong passion for aged rum,” said Dr. Joy. “The Source is a tribute to the artistry, dedication, and spirit of our people.”

Each decanter is a work of art; heart-shaped with a rich mahogany hue, transitioning into an aquamarine base, and crowned with a handcrafted copper Doctor Bird, Jamaica’s national bird. The packaging, housed in a turquoise case with straw marquetry inspired by pressed cane, symbolises Jamaican heritage and craftsmanship.

In line with the brand’s commitment to cultural enrichment, Appleton Estate will also support the Jamaica Art Society’s 2026–2027 In Focus Fellowship, promoting local artists and curators through sponsorships, co-branded events, and immersive experiences.

The Source 51 Year Old is available in select global markets at 70,000. This landmark release joins the ranks of Appleton’s acclaimed offerings such as the Hearts Collection and 17 Year Old Legend, cementing the brand’s position at the pinnacle of premium aged rum.
