Buffalo Trace revives 19th century whiskey recipe

Buffalo Trace Distillery has unveiled Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Distiller’s Council, a limited-edition, ultra-premium Kentucky Straight Bourbon that draws directly from techniques pioneered in the 19th century by the legendary Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr.

Crafted at 100 proof using Taylor’s original sour mash process, revived with patent-pending methods by Buffalo Trace, this expression is hailed as the closest modern recreation of the bourbons made at the historic O.F.C. Distillery (now Buffalo Trace) under Taylor’s leadership. The launch pays homage to a pivotal 1996 gathering of bourbon craftsmen at Buffalo Trace, known internally as the “Distiller’s Council,” which reignited interest in Taylor’s forgotten techniques and philosophies.

Housed in a Grecian-style decanter inspired by a 1950s-era Old Taylor ad, the 750 ml bourbon will be available nationwide in limited quantities starting July 2025 at $1,499.99.

This marks the 14th addition to the celebrated E.H. Taylor lineup and precedes the bourbon’s debut in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection in Fall 2025, where it will appear as the first Bottled-in-Bond expression in the series.
