Carlsberg Denmark launches 1st regeneratively grown beer
Carlsberg Denmark has launched Grobund, a new beer brewed entirely from regeneratively grown barley malt, a first for the Danish market and a major step in the brewery's long-term sustainability strategy.
Unveiled at this year’s Danish political festival, Folkemødet, Grobund represents the start of Carlsberg’s ambitious plan to shift all its beer production to regenerative grain. The name Grobund signifies both the beer and a broader environmental movement.
“Grobund will be the symbol of a much larger movement for Carlsberg. We are already testing the barley malt in the regular Carlsberg pilsner. The goal is that by 2040, we will brew exclusively with regenerative grain across the entire Carlsberg group,” said Peter Haahr Nielsen, Managing Director of Carlsberg Denmark.
Regenerative agriculture, though still without a global definition, focuses on practices like crop rotation, plant cover, and minimal tillage. Carlsberg has developed its own standards in collaboration with Agrovi and international consulting partners.
“The raw materials we use at Carlsberg Denmark account for approximately 40 percent of our emissions. With this regenerative initiative, we can reduce those emissions while contributing to better soil health and increased biodiversity,” Nielsen noted.
Grobund, brewed at Carlsberg’s house brewery in Valby Bakke, is currently available on tap and in cans at Folkemødet and the Home of Carlsberg.
