As the world raises a toast on World Whisky Day, few names resonate with the quiet mastery and global reverence as Shinji Fukuyo, the fifth Chief Blender of House of Suntory. With a career defined by elegance, discipline, and creativity, Fukuyo personifies the Japanese ethos of whisky making, rooted in harmony and precision.
In a recent milestone moment for India’s premium spirits landscape, Fukuyo visited New Delhi to celebrate the legacy of Hibiki, Suntory’s luxury blended whisky. Introduced in 1989 to commemorate the brand’s 90th anniversary, Hibiki brings together malt whiskies from Yamazaki and Hakushu, and grain whisky from Chita, matured in a delicate balance of American oak, Spanish oak, and rare Mizunara casks. The result: a whisky of sublime complexity and harmony, true to the Japanese philosophy of Wa (harmony).
The immersive masterclass hosted by Fukuyo saw connoisseurs and industry leaders engage in a guided tasting, exploring the craftsmanship behind each blend. From the 24-faceted bottlesymbolising Japan’s seasons to its Kokimurasaki label, every detail of Hibiki speaks to the aesthetic of Kacho Fugetsu, the celebration of nature, art, and time.
Fukuyo, recently honoured as Master Blender of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge 2024, shared his deep admiration for India’s growing appreciation for refined whiskies. “Indian consumers are discovering the depth, nuance, and soul of Japanese whisky. It’s a privilege to bring Hibiki here,” he said.
As whisky lovers celebrate across the globe today, World Whisky Day becomes more than a celebration of the spirit—it’s a tribute to the masters behind the blend. And in Shinji Fukuyo, the world salutes not just a master blender, but a storyteller of time, wood, and tradition.
