Gujarat permits 28 hotels to sell liquor
In a written reply, the government stated that no hotel has faced permit suspension in the past two years. Responding to a supplementary question, the government revealed that liquor sales from these hotels generated ₹14.45 crore in tax revenue between February 1, 2023 and January 31, 2024, which rose to ₹19.53 crore for the corresponding period in 2024-25.
Meanwhile, official data showed that the number of active liquor health permits in Gujarat grew by 3.5 percent in 2024 to 45,000, with sources attributing the stagnation to the high cost of maintaining permits.
Obtaining a liquor health permit in Gujarat requires an initial payment of ₹4,000, split equally between application and medical examination fees, followed by an annual renewal fee of ₹2,000. Ahmedabad led with 14,000 active liquor health permits in 2024, reflecting a 4 percent increase, while Surat and Rajkot saw declines of 2.6 percent and 4.5 percent, respectively. Gandhinagar recorded the sharpest drop of 13.6 percent, whereas Vadodara and Jamnagar saw significant increases of 16.7 percent and 7.9 percent, respectively.
