Walking up the winding trail to the Mohan Meakin distillery in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, is like entering a different time. Tucked away at over 6,000 feet above sea level, this legendary facility blends seamlessly into its pine-forested surroundings. Its colonial-era stone buildings, softened by age and mountain mist, hold nearly 170 years of uninterrupted legacy, quietly continuing to produce spirits that have shaped India’s drinking culture and captivated palates across the globe.

In a world of rapid change and mass production, the Mohan Meakin distillery stands as a testament to the enduring power of tradition, quality, and the pursuit of liquid perfection. Standing here, surrounded by the gentle hum of fermentation and the rich aroma of ageing spirits, I am struck by how this humble hill station became the birthplace of a tradition that would eventually span the globe. The mountain air that once drew British colonials seeking respite from the plains now carries the distinctive notes of world-class whiskies, creating an olfactory symphony that speaks to both heritage and innovation, writes BISHAN Kumar.

Established in 1855, the Kasauli distillery is Asia’s one of the oldest, and its enduring presence is no accident. Here, tradition isn’t just preserved, it thrives. While mass production defines much of the spirits industry today, Mohan Meakin has remained focussed on artisanal excellence. Walking through its corridors and cellars, I could sense the silent discipline of generations who have worked with grain, water, and wood to create spirits of uncommon depth.

Legacy Continues…

Mohan Meakin Legacy Continues

Among its standout contributions to modern Indian whisky is Solan Gold, a genuine Indian single malt that has developed a loyal and growing following. Matured in carefully selected American oak casks, this whisky captures the essence of its high-altitude origin— crisp air, mineral-rich spring water, and deliberate craftsmanship. With a limited annual production, Solan Gold isn’t mass-marketed; it is sought after by those who appreciate subtlety, character, and authenticity. Its smooth, mellow texture and gentle complexity sets it apart, not just within India, but increasingly among connoisseurs broad.

The Kasauli water, naturally filtered through Himalayan rock, plays a pivotal role in shaping these spirits. Rich in minerals and low in harsh impurities, it imparts a natural sweetness to the distillate and supports clean fermentation. Every stage—from mashing to maturation—is guided with precision, resulting in a product that reflects its terroir and heritage.

Crafting a New Identity

But this distillery is not resting on legacy alone. Innovation flows just as freely here.

Mohan Meakin entered the craft gin space with a bold and original offering: Jamun Indian Craft Gin. It was a completely new expression of Indian botanical spirit-making. Distilled in small batches with a blend of traditional and native botanicals and spices, Jamun Gin quickly carved a niche among India’s emerging gin enthusiasts. It delivers a well-balanced, complex profile—elegant, earthy, and nuanced—appealing to both purists and those exploring premium Indian spirits. Its success laid the foundation for the introduction of IQ Gin, a crisp, London Dry-style gin with a refined structure and contemporary appeal.

Every cask is evaluated individually, aged with care, and selected for blending only when deemed ready. This devotion to detail ensures that whether it’s a bottle of Solan Gold or Jamun Gin, the consumer experiences something authentic—crafted, not manufactured.

As demand for these high-quality products continues to grow, the distillery is expanding. The focus is on increasing maturation capacity, with new ageing rooms and barrel space being added to support long-term planning and innovation. Spirits will take the time they need, and the distillery is building for a future that respects that pace.

Even beyond its own labels, the influence of Mohan Meakin stretches far. The distillery supplies bulk spirits to several leading players in India’s liquor industry, often setting benchmarks in quality. Yet what truly sets Kasauli apart is its ability to harmonise the old and the new, heritage and progress in a single pour.

People First, Always

What’s remarkable is that despite its heritage, Mohan Meakin continues to nurture a forward-thinking culture. The distillery invests as much in its people as it does in its products. Generations of families have worked here, with younger personnel trained meticulously over years to become distillers. It’s a system rooted in mentorship, experience, and trust.

As the sun dipped behind the hills, casting long golden shadows across the stone courtyard, I took one last look at the copper stills and ageing casks. Mohan Meakin’s Kasauli distillery isn’t just a place; it’s a philosophy; a reminder that in the world of spirits, age, patience, and purpose still matter.
