The International Association of Airport and Duty Free Stores (IAADFS) has announced that its president and CEO, Michael Payne, will step down from his role, transitioning to the position of chief advisor to the board.

Chairman Rene Riedi confirmed the decision on August 11, noting that Michael will continue to contribute in areas such as advocacy, governance, and programme content, while gradually stepping back from daily operations, including membership services and budget management.

“As we go through scheduled strategic changes and redefine our scope as an organisation, we want to take advantage of his knowledge and relationships,” said Rene. “We are pleased to have his continued involvement and support.” Payne is expected to play an active role at the upcoming Cannes summit.

Operational responsibilities will remain with Steven Antolick, promoted to executive director in 2023, under IAADFS’s management firm contract with Smithbucklin.

Michael, who has led IAADFS since 2016, said, “I feel this is a really good solution as we go through this transition period. We now have an energised board with members who understand the changes needed to better serve our members and reflect the rapidly changing nature of our industry. It’s a perfect time for new leadership and new thinking.”

Earlier this year, IAADFS welcomed two new board members as part of its ongoing renewal efforts.
