India could soon be hit with a 10 percent tariff on exports to the United States, as U.S. President Donald Trump warned that BRICS nations, including India, will face new import duties “pretty soon.” The warning came alongside Trump’s announcement of a 50 percent tariff on copper imports and a hint at a steep 200 percent tariff on pharmaceuticals, which could directly impact India’s high-value generic drug exports to the U.S.

With the India-U.S. trade deal now awaiting Trump’s final decision, uncertainty looms. According to a media outlet, India has already submitted what it calls a decent final offer, covering bilateral goods trade worth $150 billion-$200 billion. U.S. officials will now determine whether to accept the deal as proposed or push for further concessions. Indian negotiators are not expected to make any additional offers.

Trump has indicated a broader shift in trade policy, using tariffs as a tool to increase U.S. leverage. While agreements with the U.K. and China have reportedly been finalised, India’s deal remains pending. Trump has delayed tariffs on imports from 14 countries, including Japan and South Korea, until August 1, after which April 2 tariff levels could be reinstated for countries without finalised deals.
