In a major policy move aimed at bolstering tourism and curbing illicit liquor trade, the Tribes Advisory Council (TAC) of Jharkhand, chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, on Wednesday approved a proposal to set up retail liquor outlets in tribal-dominated areas designated as tourist sites. The decision was taken during the first TAC meeting since the formation of the Soren-led government for a second term.

Under the proposal, liquor outlets will be permitted in districts and panchayats where the tribal population exceeds 50 percent and the area is recognised as a tourist site of international, national, state, or local significance. However, areas near religious sites will be strictly excluded.

The TAC also approved key amendments to the Jharkhand Excise Hotel, Restaurant, Bar, and Club (Licensing and Operation) Rules, 2025, which will now allow the issuance of trade licenses for hotels, bars, and restaurants in tribal areas with significant tourist footfall. The government stated that these steps are aimed at enhancing tourism, generating revenue, and curbing illicit alcohol sales.
