JSLMA moves to secure GI Status for Japanese Whisky

The Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA) has initiated efforts to register Japanese Whisky for Geographical Indication (GI) status, aiming to establish a legally recognized definition for the category.

JSLMA Transparent LogoAs part of the initiative, JSLMA has also introduced a new logo to reinforce its ‘Standards for Labeling Japanese Whisky’, set in February 2021. Members will apply this logo to products that meet the industry standards, making it easier for consumers to identify authentic Japanese whisky and boosting its global recognition.

This move marks a crucial step in JSLMA’s broader goal of legally codifying its industry standards. The association is consulting with the Japan National Tax Agency to formalize ‘Labeling Standards for the Manufacturing Process and Quality of Japanese Whisky’ under the Liquor Industry Association Act. The GI status would further safeguard the authenticity of Japanese whisky, ensuring quality control and protecting its identity on the global stage.
