Kerala to launch its own brandy by next year
The Kerala government is preparing to launch its own brandy by February 2026. The initiative follows the strong market response to the state-owned Jawan Rum brand and reflects a shift to cater to consumer preferences in northern Kerala, where brandy commands a significant share of the spirits market.
The new brandy will be produced at Malabar Distilleries Ltd., a state-run facility located in Menonpara, Palakkad. Construction of a new Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) manufacturing unit at the site is scheduled to begin on July 7. The facility will feature a fully automated production line with a capacity of 13,500 cases per day. In its initial phase, the unit will operate on a single shift, employing at least 40 workers.
This development marks a notable upgrade from the current manual production at Travancore Sugars and Chemicals Ltd. in Pulikeezhu, Pathanamthitta, where 6,000 to 8,000 cases of Jawan Rum are produced daily. Palakkad aligns with the consumption patterns, positioning the new brandy to tap into the preferences of consumers in northern Kerala.
