Lagavulin weaves legacy into The Lagavulin Islay Tartan
Lagavulin Single Malt Scotch Whisky has unveiled The Lagavulin Islay Tartan, a bespoke fabric that translates the distillery’s 200-year-old heritage into textile art. Debuting at Coveteur Fashion Week Closing Party in New York on Monday, the tartan was showcased by actor Nick Offerman who donned a custom suit tailored by Martin Greenfield Clothiers, marking another chapter in his decade-long creative partnership with Lagavulin.
Designed in collaboration with creative designer Simon Goldman and his partner Myles Kusaba of the newly launched M&S Co., and woven at Scotland’s legendary Lovat Mill, the tartan pays homage to Islay’s rugged beauty and Lagavulin’s iconic smokey character.
“Lagavulin Whisky has always been defined by Islay, shaped by its landscape, community, and more than two centuries of craftsmanship,” said Greg Bruce, Whisky Specialist and Blender at the distillery. “Tartan speaks to the same idea; a Scottish tradition that carries history forward through craft. Bringing the two together is about continuity and honouring the past while shaping the present.”
The tartan’s design draws directly from Lagavulin’s elements. Six amber lines symbolise the distillery’s six copper stills, deep browns reference the peat and moss that fuel its signature smokiness, greens reflect Islay’s rolling fields, while white, grey and blue echo the island’s whitewashed walls, slate rooftops and ocean hues.
“My work is rooted in the belief that every fabric carries meaning and memory,” said Simon. “With Lagavulin, we wanted to tell a 200-year story through a new medium.”
