Maharashtra’s proposal to allow 2,160 new liquor shops has been put on hold after strong opposition from Shiv Sena ministers. The plan, aimed at increasing state revenue, was part of a broader move that included a hike in excise duty, already approved, leading to a sharp rise in liquor prices in the state.

The proposal faced backlash over concerns of public opposition and was revised to just 360 shops. However, this too was opposed, prompting Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to defer the decision.

A state committee had suggested granting licences to liquor manufacturers, bypassing the long-standing freeze on new shop licences since 1972. The panel also recommended tax reforms, easier rules for beer dispensers, and boosting wine sales. While the excise duty hike is in effect, the expansion of liquor retail remains under review.
