The Odisha government is set to implement geofencing technology around educational institutions to prevent the delivery of alcoholic beverages via online platforms.

According to media reports, the Odisha Space Applications Centre (ORSAC) has been tasked with developing the geofencing infrastructure. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure safer, substance-free environments in colleges and universities across the state.

Under the proposed system, virtual boundaries will be established around educational institutions. These geofenced zones will be integrated into the delivery applications of major online food and beverage platforms. While food deliveries will remain unaffected, any attempt to deliver alcoholic beverages within these restricted areas will trigger real-time alerts.

The alerts will be sent to both the delivery service providers and concerned authorities at the institutions, allowing for prompt intervention. The state aims to use this tech-enabled solution to discourage underage and unauthorised access to alcohol, reinforcing its commitment to student welfare and public safety.
