Saudi Arabia will lift its 73-year ban on alcohol in 2026 under a highly regulated licensing framework, marking a major shift in its social landscape. The change comes as Saudi Arabia prepares to host Expo 2030 and the FIFA World Cup 2034.

Saudi Arabia’s historic move is expected to boost international visitor numbers, create jobs, and support economic diversification efforts, while maintaining a strong emphasis on responsible consumption and public order.

As per the reports, alcohol will be permitted only in designated venues such as five-star hotels, luxury resorts, diplomatic enclaves, and select zones within high-profile tourism projects like Neom, Sindalah Island, and the Red Sea Project.

The new policy will allow the sale of beer, wine, and cider, while spirits with more than 20 percent alcohol content will remain banned. Sales will be limited to licensed venues with trained personnel, and public consumption or retail sales will continue to be prohibited. Consumption at home or in public areas will remain illegal. The government plans to strictly regulate the system to prevent misuse and ensure it aligns with cultural sensitivities.
