Heineken has introduced a playful and innovative prototype designed to tackle a modern social issue—people scrolling through social media at the bar instead of interacting with those around them. The AI-powered device, aptly named ‘The Flipper’, is a phone case that uses voice-detection technology to flip phones face-down whenever it senses a social moment, like someone saying “cheers” or other related phrases, and engage in real-life conversations.

Heineken FlipperConnected to a robotic arm by Swedish inventor Simone Giertz, The Flipper physically nudges users to disconnect from digital distractions and get #SocialOffSocials. “I love The Flipper – it’s a clever reminder not to get distracted by social media when I’m trying to socialise,” Simone shared.

According to Heineken, 47 percent of adults admit to being “phubbers”—those frequently prioritising their phones over face-to-face interaction. Nabil Nasser, Global Head of Heineken, noted, “Bars are some of the best places to make new connections. The Flipper is a fun way to remind people to flip off their socials and be more present.”

Though still in prototype stage, The Flipper continues Heineken’s tongue-in-cheek campaign to bring back real social interaction. For those who can’t get their hands on the device, the message is simple: flip your phone the old-fashioned way and enjoy the moment.
